Privacy Policy

Effective 18 August 2026 · Last updated 29 August 2026

Matra (मात्रा) is a Hindi literacy app. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, and what rights you have. We keep it specific on purpose: it describes what the app actually does, not what we might one day want to do.

The short version. We collect your email address, your first name, your learning progress, and basic usage information so the app works and gets better. There is no advertising in Matra, and we never sell or share your personal information for anyone else's purposes. You can delete your account and its data from inside the app at any time.

Who we are

Matra is operated from California, United States, and is the controller of the personal information described here. For anything in this policy — questions, requests, or complaints — contact learnwithmatra@gmail.com. A real person reads every message.

Information we collect

Account information

When you create an account we store your email address and your first name, and your password in a hashed (irreversible) form. We never store your password as readable text. Your first name becomes your starting display name, which other users can see — you can change your display name at any time in Profile.

If you sign in with Google or Apple instead, we receive your verified email address, the name you chose to share, and a stable account identifier from that provider — never your password. We use them only to create and sign you into your Matra account.

You may also choose an avatar. The built-in avatars are preset illustrations; if you instead pick a photo from your device's library, that photo stays on your device — it is never uploaded to us and never shown to other users.

Learning progress

We store what you have completed in the app: lessons, quizzes, practice and reading items, your points, level, daily streak, achievements, and your spaced-repetition review schedule. This is what lets your progress follow you across devices and lets you compare streaks with friends you have added.

Who's learning, and their age

During signup we ask who the account is for (yourself, your child, or both) and the learner's age range. These two answers are required, because they decide how we treat the account: an account whose holder is under 13 gets the protections described under Children's privacy below, including having social discovery switched off. If you tell us the learner is your child, we store the child's age range (for example, 5–7) as information about your account — not the child's — and it is not linked to any information identifying your child. Age answers are never shown to other users.

Optional questions about you

We also ask two optional questions — your country, and why you are learning Hindi — so we can build for the people actually using the app. They are labeled optional in the app; you can skip them, the app works fully without them, and they are never shown to other users.

In-app purchases

Matra is free, and nothing sold in the Shop unlocks any lesson. If you choose to buy something (a cosmetic, streak shields, or a tip), the payment is handled entirely by Apple — we never see your card or payment details. We store a record of the purchase: the product, the store's transaction identifier, and the date, so we can grant what you bought, restore it if you reinstall, and reconcile refunds.

Friends and invites

If you sign up using a friend's invite code, we connect the two accounts as friends and record who invited whom, so invite rewards and the friends leaderboard work. Friend requests, and the reports and blocks described below, are likewise stored as part of providing those features.

Device and usage information

The app records how it is used — screens opened, lessons and quizzes started and finished, and similar in-app events — along with the app version, the platform (iOS or Android), and an anonymous per-install identifier. We use this to understand which parts of the app help people learn and which are getting in the way.

We also store the time zone your device reports, so that reminders and streak calculations happen at the right time in your day rather than ours.

Approximate location

We do not use GPS and never ask for location permission. We estimate an approximate country (and sometimes a region or nearest city) from your device's language setting and from the IP address your device connects with. This lookup runs on our own server against a local database — your IP address is not sent to a location provider. We use it only to understand where our users are, and it is never shown to other users.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, we store a push token for your device so we can send reminders about your streak and your due reviews, and alerts about friend requests and leaderboard changes. You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings, and we delete the token when you delete your account.

Feedback and email updates

If you send feedback in the app we store your message, an optional rating, and the reply-to email address shown in the form. That field is pre-filled with your account email so we can answer you, and you can change or clear it before sending — a blank field sends no email address at all. If you sign up for product updates we store your email address for that newsletter until you unsubscribe.

Crash and error reports

When the app crashes or hits an unexpected error, technical details — the device model, operating system and app version, and what the app was doing at the time — are sent to Sentry, a crash-reporting service, so we can find and fix the problem. We configure these reports not to include your name, email, or account details.

Why we use it, and our legal basis

What we never do

Who else touches your information

We use a small number of service providers to run the app. They process information only on our instructions, only to provide their service to us, and they are contractually required to protect it at least as well as this policy requires. They may not use it for their own purposes.

Other disclosures

We may also disclose personal information:

What other users can see

Other users can see your display name, avatar, and public learning stats — your streak, points, and number of completed sets — on leaderboards and when you become friends. Your display name starts out as your first name, and you can change it any time in Profile. Your email address, your answers to the demographic questions, and your estimated location are never shown to other users. Accounts belonging to children under 13 do not appear in friend search or on the public leaderboard at all (see below).

If another user's name or behaviour is inappropriate, you can report them or block them from their profile popup on the Friends tab. Blocking removes any friendship and hides you from each other everywhere in the app; reports come straight to us and a real person reviews them.

Children's privacy

Matra is made for families, and we take children's privacy seriously. We comply with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

When a parent manages the account

If you create an account and tell us your child is the learner, you are the account holder and the data subject. We store your email address, your child's age range, and the account's learning progress. We do not collect any information that identifies your child.

When a child under 13 has their own account

If an account holder tells us they are under 13, we:

Children's accounts can still add friends by privately sharing an invite code, and can see a leaderboard of accepted friends only.

Parents' rights

If you are the parent or guardian of a child using Matra, you may at any time review the information we hold about your child's account, ask us to delete the account and its data, or tell us to stop collecting information from your child. To do any of these, reply to the notice email you received or contact us at learnwithmatra@gmail.com. We will verify your request and act on it promptly.

If we learn of unnoticed child data

If we discover we have collected personal information from a child under 13 without a parent having been notified, we will disable the account's social features and contact a parent, or delete the information.

Children outside the United States

Some countries set a higher age at which a child can agree to online services on their own — up to 16 in parts of the UK and the European Economic Area. If you are under that age where you live, please use Matra with a parent or guardian's involvement, and have them create the account. A parent or guardian can exercise any of the rights below on the child's behalf.

Your rights and choices

Things you can do yourself, right now

Rights you can ask us to honour

Wherever you live, you can ask us to do any of the following, and we will do it free of charge:

Email learnwithmatra@gmail.com from the address on your account, or tell us how to reach you if you cannot. We will verify the request and respond within 30 days. We will never treat you differently for exercising any of these rights.

If you are in the UK or the European Economic Area and you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority. We would appreciate the chance to put it right first.

California privacy rights

If you are a California resident, the CCPA/CPRA gives you the rights to know, delete, correct, and port your personal information, to opt out of its sale or sharing, to limit the use of sensitive personal information, and not to be discriminated against for exercising any of them. The rights above cover all of these, and the same email address handles the requests.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising — so there is nothing to opt out of. We have not done so in the past 12 months, and we do not do it for anyone we know to be under 16. We do not use your information to infer characteristics about you.

In the past 12 months we collected the categories described under "Information we collect" above — identifiers (email, first name, an anonymous install identifier), internet and app activity, approximate location inferred from IP, purchase records, crash diagnostics, and the demographic answers you gave — for the purposes and from the sources described there.

Do Not Track. Some browsers can send a "Do Not Track" signal. There is no common standard for how services should respond, so our website does not respond to those signals. We do not track you across other websites or apps in any case.

How long we keep information

Routine backups may briefly contain deleted information; they are overwritten in the ordinary course and are never used to restore information you asked us to delete. We may keep information longer where the law requires it.

Security

Passwords are stored hashed with bcrypt, and sign-in tokens are stored hashed rather than in readable form. Traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security — so we keep the amount of personal information we hold deliberately small, which is the most effective protection we can offer.

Where your information is processed

Our servers and service providers are located in the United States. If you use Matra from outside the United States — including from the UK, the European Economic Area, or India — your information will be transferred to and processed there, in a country whose privacy laws may differ from your own. Where such a transfer is subject to UK or EEA law, we rely on appropriate safeguards for it, including the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses with our providers.

Cookies and tracking technologies

The Matra app does not use cookies, advertising identifiers, or any cross-app or cross-site tracking. The app stores some information on your own device (your session, your progress, and your preferences) so it can work offline and keep you signed in; that stays on your device until you log out or delete the app. Our website sets no tracking or advertising cookies.

Links to other websites

Our website and app may link to sites we do not operate — the App Store, for example. We are not responsible for their content or their privacy practices, and we encourage you to read the privacy policy of any site you visit.

Changes to this policy

If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this page and the dates at the top. For material changes we will let you know before they take effect, by email or through a notice in the app. Material changes affecting children's information will be described here before they take effect.
